British Gas - account credit, and switching supopliers
Options
Hi
I have been with British Gas for my Electricity and Gas since I moved into my house 3 and a half years ago. I'm looking at switching supplier to save money and after logging in to my British Gas app it says my account is £203.60 in credit for electricity and £272.31 in credit for gas. Is this a lot? Should I be claiming this money back? I know it's often built up for the winter period, but it seems really high. Plus, if I switch, what should I do with this credit?

Make sure the apparent credit is not about to be wiped out by an imminent direct debit and make sure the meter readings are up to date and are actual not estimated. Also compare separate suppliers, not just dual fuel. Start comparing with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?'. Bung the refund into your bank or savings account.0

Credit statements are only accurate for the date on which the meter readings were taken/given, by the time the bill reaches the customer they are already out of dateAt this time of the year, both the Gas & Elec accounts should be in credit to help pay for the extra energy you will use over winter, this particularly applies to the Gas as 80% of your annual use will be over the Winter monthsThe £200+ credit on Electricity needs looking at as in most gas households, the Elec daily useage remains fairly stable throughout the year.If you change supplier and you really should, the credit balance on your Final Bill from BG will be returned to you, so keep your D/Debit open so they can send it to your bankAs Gerry1 advises, - Start your search with the Citizen Advice energy site - Do this twice, Once for Elec only and again for Gas only. When you think you have found the right supplier, it's important you check the customer feed-back before you sign up1
