I used Real Seeds for the first time this year and have been very pleased. I've bought from Lidl too, and they sell in France and might be worth a look - cheap prices. Franchi seeds are cheaper in Italy, and quantities are generous for the larger orto, so if you or any friends go there they are worth a look. I can recommend the Borlotto Nano (dwarf) and particularly the Trombetta d'Albenga - both tasty and fun!I'm trying out seed saving as well on some of the Real Seed varieties none of which are F1.1

I save a lot of my own seed, but those I need to buy,are bought already.Along with seed compost, and all stored appropriately.I got caught out in March when all the world and his dad thought the pretty pictures on the seed packets meant they could grow a months groceries in a weekend! Proper gardeners know better.1

Thank you for the tip about Lidl. about 15km away but hadn't thought of looking there for seeds so will certainly check it out. The only seeds I couldn't get this year were aubergines so I had to buy plants of unknown variety; they are quite prolific and tasty but really long and skinny. Can anyone recommend a tasty, chunkier variety, not F1 and also white aubergines. No problem about growing outdoors as we live in France ( about half way down the Atlantic coast).

Lidl will most likely only have seeds for a limited period in spring. They represent good value because the majority of the display needs to sell out inside a month to 6 weeks so the stand isn't taking up valuable retail space.

Proper gardeners know better.Don't we just.I'm on a FB gardening group and it surprised me how many people honestly thought they could sow seeds in April & pick bucketfuls of fruit & veg in May or June at the latestOn the plus side very many now admit they appreciate the effort that farmers have put into growing food, and had their eyes opened on the organic "I don't want to use XXXXides" as their hard work was slug / bug / bird eaten or somehow fell to pest & disease and there is not a magic wand to remove caterpillars or aphidsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0

This may not be helpful to the OP, but we subscribe to Kitchen Garden magazine. Each issue comes with 2 or 3 packets of Kings vegetable or salad seeds, and these were a lifesaver last Spring. The magazine is fantastic for every possible aspect of growing food crops, very colourful and inspiring.
