best laptop for student?

Looking at one which has high speed and can have several applications open at same time, including mapping , excel etc. This looks like it will cost £500 plus...any recommendations. Could go more than 500 for the right laptop.

What course? Recommendations for one for a STEM degree, especially engineering, are going to be different for one for philosophy.

  • Most students seem to have Macs these days. Not a bad shout as they are reliable but a budget buster.

Also is it going to be carried around all day between lectures in which case lightness and battey life are important but if it's going to be plugged in at a desk then not so much.

I don't think I've seen any data on the market share for student laptop brands. Apple may be the biggest individual brand but I doubt that they have the majority. Be careful about jumping for a Macbook as while it may bring street cred there may be problems down the line with incompatible applications especially in science and engineering where many packages are Windows only.
