Android notifications mystery

Options
Sorry, but me again with another Android mystery - and apologies in advance for not knowing the right terms for some of this stuff.
The problem is with a Motorola G7 Power, which is on Android 10.  I switch the phone on in a morning, and after using it I briefly push the power switch to kill the display.  When I next want to use it, I just do the thing with my fingerprint and off we go.  Having used it, I then hit the power switch again, and so forth for the rest of the day.  No problem.
Until recently, I would get the notification sound for an incoming email even if I hadn't been near the phone for ages.  Upon hearing the sound, I'd just pick up the phone, do the fingerprint thing, and read the message.  But not any more.  Now, if I leave the phone sitting on my desk, I don't hear the notification sound unless I pick up the phone and do the fingerprint thing.  In fact, I suspect that sometimes all I have to do is pick up the phone, but I'm not certain about that.
As far as I know, I haven't altered any settings: all that's changed is the upgrade to Android 10.  Can any kind soul please tell me how to get back to getting notifications irrespective of whether the phone is "live" or just sitting quietly asleep on my desk?

    Is Gmail Sync ON ?
  • Ok this is probably to do with battery saving settings.

Although you would think all android phones are the same, sadly each phone manufacturer tweaks the interface so they are all slightly different, you will have to dig around in the settings.

What is probably happening is that when you have not used the phone in a while, it is putting some apps to sleep, so that they don't drain your battery in the background, which can be handy for some things but a pain for others.

Search in the settings for sleeping apps and battery saver modes. You should be able to set apps like Gmail to never sleep, that way notifications can always come through.

Well, that does indeed seem to have been the cause of my vexation.  Thank you very much, nerox.  I'd never have thought of that!
