Hi, would this work, my son is moving into a new flat, if he uses a referral link to sign up to the existing supplier of the property would he be entitled to receive the referral payment.

Unlikely. He will be in an expensive 'deemed' contract with the existing supplier the moment he switches on a light. He will need to register with the existing supplier and submit meter reading(s) the day he takes possession, which is not necessarily the move-in date. Never let an estate agent give the meter readings or choose an energy supplier.0

why? they have already said that they pass the details to the energy supplier and opening readings, the supplier is Octopus.

I hope your son has got full access to his meters, reads them at least monthlyNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
If he lets anyone else submit a reading he may well find that he's paying for consumption by a previous occupier (or the developer) who massaged the final reading, or didn't give one, or didn't even give notice of vacating the property. Or he may end up paying for any period when it was empty.Similarly, if the agent selected Spark then they will be doing very nicely and getting a bung at his expense. If he doesn't take control then he may learn the hard way.0

He gets the keys on Monday morning and we will be sure to contact Octopus with the opening readings, and also check what readings they put on the inventory and then move away to a different supplier as soon as possible.

Octopus have some interesting tarrifs, I think @MWT is an expert in that area. All of their tariffs have no exit fees so he will be able to select the cheapest of their tariffs without fear of being locked in.I would suggest he asks to be put on their 'Tracker Tariff' while he decides what he wants to do.These are the rates today for the Eastern region:They change on a daily basis but will usually always be lower than their current fixed or normal variable tariff.0
