Hi all,
About 2 years ago we got a quote to have our 3 bed semi detached house re-rendered in Stoke-on-Trent and were quoted £15K., which was beyond our means. Initially we were only asking for one of the three walls to be done but got told that we may as well do the whole house and they refused to quote us for just the one wall.
The wall in question has got to the point now where it is in dire need of being re-rendered. We have had two quotes quotes again both at £15K for the whole house; again no one seems to want to quote for just the one wall. We cannot afford £15K outright and no-ne we have had quotes from offers finance options and we really don't want to take out a loan.
We appreciate the old rendering will need to be knocked off and scaffolding will be required and application of new rendering, but I don't know where we are going to get the money from. We know we can apply for the green homes grant scheme at the end of September for solid wall insulation but I doubt we will get the whole £5K and even if we did, that would still leave us £10K to find.
We just don't know what to do or where to go from here.

If you are rerendering more than 25% of the house, building regulation kick in and they may require you to fit external wall insulation. If the people quoting £15K are going to insulate, then the price isn't too far off the mark. Not cheap, so worth getting a few more quotes. The difference in cost between doing one wall or all three is not going to be huge, so it is worth biting the bullet and getting the lot done in one go.Her courage will change the world.

Thank you for the reply.
In none of the quotes has external wall insulation been mentioned; in fact there has been no breakdown of costs (stripping of existing rendering, scaffolding, application of a sealant, application of new render, labour costs). They have all simply looked at it for a few seconds and said £15K.
Whilst I appreciate that it may be best to get it done all in one go, we don't have £15K available /stashed away and we are are not very keen on taking out a loan.1 -

Finance options is just another way of saying "taking out a loan".I had a quote to render a 3 bed pre-war semi for around £7K (including scaffolding), so shop around. Adding external wall insulation in to the mix would take it up to the £14-15K mark... It might be worth looking at this latest Green Homes scheme to see if you qualify and it might bring the cost down a bit.Her courage will change the world.

We are looking into the green homes scheme, however, whilst it appears that we will qualify, this would only be for a max of £5K and the companies we have tried to contact over the last 24-48hours have all been very negative; they are too busy, now is not the right time of year to be doing rendering and/or external wall insulation and we will have to wait until spring at the earliest even though the green homes scheme isn't launching until end of September/beginning of October.

I think Free Bear is working for an insulation company,,,, 4 replies to different posts all the same.
EWI is no use at all on walls with a cavity, so unless you have a solid wall home and one of your is on benefits, the grants are out.
How long is a piece of string ???/ Render is added on a square meter rate. Knocking off and scaffold prices have to be added, probably a skip too.
1 Semi or detached? 3 or 4 sides.
2 1/2/3/ stories high...
3 Is the remaining render on the house blown or cracked?
4 Any render company worth their salt will do what you ask. They just want to boost the price up.
Scaffolda semi, 3 sides £2000
Remove old render £12 mtr
Skip £200
Backing coat and mesh £32 mtr
Through coloured top coat £38 mtr
If your house is 180 sq mtrs .
get more quotes for the one wall. Prices depend on where you are in the UK of course.

I do not work for any insulation company, and quite frankly, who I do work for is none of your business. As for "EWI is no use on cavity walls" - You've posted the same comment elsewhere. The weight of evidence from real world installations show your opinion to be wrong. Indeed, there have been thread on this forum where people have had EWI fitted to solid stone/brick walls and have had severe problems with damp afterwards. Her courage will change the world.
