Debit card warning

I've discovered that making an error in inputting debit card details for a payment transfer does not prevent the payment going ahead, even though at the time a message comes up saying the transfer cannot happen because of the error. So beware,.
I sought to make a £100 payment -- to a highly reputable charity -- with Barclays debit card. I mistyped the expiry date. Message came on screen saying the transfer could not proceed because the expiry date given was invalid. I started again. Message came up saying the 3-digit security code could not be recognised, so transaction could not go through. .On the third attempt I got it right, and received receipt thanking me for the payment. I also got a text message on my phone confirming that the invalid expiry date meant my earlier payment could not be made. Two days later, looking online at my bank account, all three payments were listed, one as having been made and two as having been authorised and now pending. A phone call to Barclays revealed this was a common issue that the Barclays person I was talking to spent a lot of time trying to help customers on, though ultimately the person being paid had to void the transaction or leave it in limbo for seven days after which it would purge itself. His advice, which I pass on, was never to use a debit card for online purchases, only a credit card which left any risk with the credit card company.

I use my debit card all over the place online, but if I feel I might need some extra protection I will use a credit card. I'm surprised a Barclays CS rep advised you not to use a debit card online, but there again I wonder how much he actually knows if his job is working in a call centre? Probably a lot less than most of us on here.DavidWalket said:His advice, which I pass on, was never to use a debit card for online purchases, only a credit card which left any risk with the credit card company.1 -

The one payment will go through - the 2 pending transactions will drop off within 3-5 working days.1 -
So the payment has not gone ahead. It is just showing as pending, but given you have proof it will not go through. It should not.
Card payments can take 14 days, or as others say 10 working days max to clear.Life in the slow lane0 -
Never use a debit card for online purchases...if you can't copy a few simple numbers on to a form. If you can manage to correctly enter the numbers, you should be fine.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0
