The government in the UK doesn’t tell people how much they can spend, on anything. If you are earning £1m per year, and decide to spend £20k per week on caviar and Champagne, then that’s up to you.
Especially as that comes to £1,040,000   in a year!     :)

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation publishes an annual Minimum Income Standard report which suggests what different family types spend. The 2020 report states that a Single adult of working age spends £51.17 on food, a Couple pensioner £75.53, a Lone parent, two children aged 2-4, and primary school age £81.74 and Couple, two children aged 2-4, and primary school age £112.39.

Details can be found on their website.
This is why their poverty stats are a load of rubbish, and adds a bit of weight that many in the bottom demographics just can't budget properly.

The 2 of us spend about £45 a week on food for both of us. And even then, all the unhealthy extras like crisps & ice cream is all hers. On my own I could easily eat healthily for under £20 a week.

What happens if the government tells you what your maximum is and you spend more?

    Summary execution.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Criminal record for life. And your kids taken away by Social Services for over feeding them.
