Hi All,

Any recommendations on cardboard boxes to use for packing up house? Size, style but also best places to buy for price as well?

Thanks!

A lot of these get passed around on our local facebook group.  Don't (says painful experience) use large ones for books.

  • Get lots of small boxes, especially for books as they are really heavy when stacked.

Get a box-packing tape dispenser, much much faster than scissors.

Similarly, at the other end get a good box cutting knife to open up quickly.

I'm not using a removal company as I don't have any big items to move. It's just a van hire and family help!

    Thanks - and noted!
  • I bought mine, 12 x 12 x 18 for my books etc from www.kitepackaging.co.uk, as well as the tape and dispenser. When the removal company came they left gigantic boxes I couldn't have managed on my own.

  • We bought ours from Ebay along with a big roll of bubble wrap. Wasn't expensive.

As others have said don't over load the boxes.

We also found it very useful to label each box not only with its contents but also which room it should go in in the new house. Made unloading the van and putting stuff in the house much easier and quicker.

If you're really looking to cut costs then wine boxes (6 bottle ones) from an off-licence are small and sturdy - I'd expect them to give you the boxes free as it means they don't have to go to cardboard disposal. Another good source is a car parts supplier, all those boxes for screenwash, oil (check no leaks!) are strong and usually packed in 6's so not too large. The only problems is getting them before they flatten them for disposal.......

Get a decent tape dispenser, less than a tenner from ebay - you'l be very glad of it.
  • Check Freecycle, we got rid of our boxes on there after moving and loads of others do as well.
  • I like the supermarket fruit trays for books etc. They carry a bit of weight, have handles and stack nicely.
