Rule of 6 - College classes with groups of 20.

I work in a college.  They were going to do social distancing in the classrooms but since going back they have decided that onsite teaching will be 100% capacity.  Computers in the classrooms are side by side.  It was planned every other PC was going to be closed off, but now they will all be utilized where they have recruited the numbers.  Students will usually be between 16 - 24.

I see that they are emphasizing people follow the rule of 6 but doesn't this defeat the purpose if they are running classes as they did, in the same layout as pre-lockdown.  They are advising students to wear facemasks, I believe it's optional.

Although you may think it not ideal, there is a vast difference between 20 people all sitting facing forward and not moving round the room, to 20 people together in a pub or home walking around, facing each other and chattering. That is before you add alcohol in to the equation.

  • Unfortunately education is except. Your personal views maybe that you don’t agree with this but that’s the way it is going, all you can do is accept it and move on or start looking for a new job.

The university I work at (as an administrator, I don't teach) has set up classrooms to allow for 2m distancing and they are asking students to wear masks as well. The maximum class size for in-person teaching has been set at 15, so even if the room normally holds 200 they are only allowing 15, to ensure the corridors aren't too crowded either.
It sounds like your college might be trying for 1m+ distancing so everyone will need to wear masks and those who don't will need 2m distancing instead.
If you don't think its safe talk to your manager and if they don't help then your health and safety department.

The rule of six is irrelevant as that only applies to socialising not work.
