If it is anything like the systems used in healthcare access is audited and if someone was found to be looking up random patients they have no connection to they'd find themselves on the way out. There were a number of people sacked or reported to authorities for looking at Alex Ferguson's records when he was in hospital a few years back.
Same with Police systems. They sometimes find and sack people who look others up on their systems for no reason.

There must be a system for accessing accounts without the customer present as well, though. For example, someone has to be able to deal with change of address notifications sent in by post. There will surely be other things for which it's needed.
There is and it is the same system that all bank staff use.
Just that not all users have the same level of access.
Working in banking is like having a parrot sat on your shoulder watching everything you do. Overstep your remit and you will be on your way out of the door.

I’ve never worked for a high street bank so things may well be different for the likes of Barclays but the systems that I’ve used don’t log system enquiries. Only staff that have a valid reason would have access to the enquiries though.

Updating the system (Address, debit, loan etc) would require additional system privileges and would need four eyes approval before taking effect.

Everything is audited including a customer account enquiry.   Not all staff have access to enquire without the Customer present.

When I worked in personal finance, every time we accessed an account it would leave a footprint. We were regularly audited and we had to leave careful notes as to why we had accessed each account. We were also warned not to search for anyone we knew or anyone famous.

  • I have worked in a call centre for a major high street bank. (It was soul destroying, would not recommend.) We were able to access a person’s account in a number of different ways. Via their sort code / account number, their credit card number, their house number and post code or just their name. The sort code / account number and credit card methods were the most accurate. Using the other methods just brought up a list of accounts.

There have been times when I have accidentally clicked on the wrong account. We were warned not to access accounts of celebrities and colleagues. We were allowed to access and view our own accounts as long as we didn’t ‘do’ anything (transfer money, amend details, etc.)

There were rumours there were two ways to access accounts. On one portal it was tracked and on the other it wasn’t. Never cared enough to look at anyone’s account other than the customers I spoke to for business reasons. I was never curious about what people were doing with their money or how much they made. That job had me dead inside.
