Anyone here managed to get a full refund on any Travel Insurance policies, if you've cancelled (due to your flight being cancelled due to Covid) prior to travel ?
I purchased 2 seperate travel insurance policies back in Feb 2020, after purchasing flights with Virgin Atlantic to New York.  Good old Virgin Atlantic subsequently cancelled my scheduled flight for Oct 2020, and after about 6 weeks (and 1 Section 75 chargeback request) I got my full refund from Travel Trolley.

So I decided to approach my 2 insurers and seek a full refund of my policy, which I told them to cancel, as my flights had been cancelled.  Both are insisting that I'm outside the 14 day cancellation period (fair enough), but given the circumstances of Covid etc, I thought they should be a bit more flexible, than the 50% refund they're offering, or an extension to both policies until Dec 2021 should I decide to rebook my flights at a later stage.

I've declined their offers, as it means I'll be maybe £60 out of pocket, and they still get money for nothing :(

Can I refer them to the Financial Ombudsman, after requesting a deadlock letter ?  What are my chances ?

I haven't tried to get mine back. Even though I didn't use it for covid I still had the benefit of cover for any illnesses/accidents etc that may have happened during the few months between booking the holiday and the holiday being cancelled. So in that sense I've had the benefit of the cover being in place just been lucky enough not need to claim on it.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Premsumably your travel insurance didn't ONLY cover you for flight cancellation?  I think you're taking the p***.

  • LVE Travel Insurance Renewal Coercion. (Money with Menaces) On ringing to not renew my worldwide cover I was told I would be unable to make any claim for the remaining period of validity i.e. effectively uninsured . This is legally untrue. I asked the operative to discuss this with the supervisor. She confirmed it was LVE policy. I raised hell. The firm listened to the recording, denied coercion and said this was a 'freak' event'. Does anyone else have a similar experience with LVE (Allianz)? If this is widespread vulnerable people will be duped.

50% is a very generous offer.  You've had cover for 8 months and only lost 2 months cover.  Rather than them getting money for nothing, you've gained lot of free cover and they've made a significant loss.

FOS won't tell them to pay more and I would imagine they will withdraw their offer as a result.
  • The number of people who think travel insurance only covers them from the minute they get to the airport, to the moment they arrive back at the same airport a week or 2 later, is staggering.
