Passed job interview but vetting seems a problem what to do next?

I passed interview they told me I had screening next thing is I worked part time on the weekends for 5 years and was under the tax bracket so have no records/company has no payslips etc they expecting me to give them. I then gave them bank statements the HR guy said 100% that would be fine but then persisted next day to ask me for references.

He then said he couldn't get hold of my boss by email or that it would be "long" to get reference this way. I told them my start date for that company and I wrote a email telling him thats all the information I have and I assumed the statements was enough evidence. What makes matters worse is I also worked(still do but was on furlough) for a sub contract company for one year which is working with the company I'm trying to join. Basically I've been on the system with this company I'm trying to join through the sub contractor for a year, and I've worked at most of the offices. One guy in the interview even said this would make things easier as he also gave me induction last year. Every week they have been in contact now 's been 8 days I've not heard from him and I had my interview a month ago. The HR guys phone goes to voicemail since I had his number but their office picks up(they initially called me about the application) but gives me somebody else. Should I just send one more email asking when I can start work because it seems like they are not interested?

Your former employer would have to have records, or at least very much should, even if they paid you NMW and you only worked 4 hours a week they have to account for the money going out the door and tell HMRC about your income.

Working in Financial Services employee vetting is very arduous and I have had two candidates that it took months to onboard because HR had to be comfortable and one of them had spent 6 months back packing around the Indian subcontinent 4 years ago and yes HR did write letters to youth hostels etc in Pakistan asking them to confirm that the candidate had spent one night for less than $5 in their establishment 4 years ago after she couldn't produce all the receipts. Ultimately though both candidates were onboarded.

It can be worth checking in with them, see where the sticking points are and try to oil the wheels... companies can respond fairly slowly to an official HR request for information but a personal request highlighting that the delays are having a human impact can help oil the wheels.
  • He got back in contact once agin seemingly ignoring my other emails because he still wants tax years I do not have. I told them I don't have and he thinks its strange. The work I do on weekends obviously isn't helping but I forwarded the managers number to the HR so hopefully this will be enough. I'm getting the sense the HR guy is enjoying messing me about....he's taken days to get back to me.

Yes, because thats in the HR guy's best interests to make everything as difficult as possible
Have you thought about being proactive and contacting your boss to check:
    1. have they received a reference request
    2. have they responded to it

You've already asked the same question on at least two other threads e.g. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6183629/offered-job-but-dont-have-hmrc-documents#latest so not sure what else anyone can add.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Good news is they told me on the phone I made it past the screening and asked me when I can start. The other dilema now is the sub contractor stopped my furlough early. I got on the phone to the HR and she twisted a story to say last time I spoke to one of them I told them I wasn't returning when I simply phoned to ask if I was able to return to work and was told they had no idea when I could return. She used this and the fact that apparently the new company asked for my reference and that is the reason she took me off furlough lol. I literally got no furlough for August despite not starting this new job.
