Offered Job but don't have HMRC documents

Options
I was working part time for 5 years doing security at the weekends. I wasn't taxed as I was under the bracket for this and HMRC have no records for me. My passed interview for another 9-5 full time job they are asking for so many things I don't have liie P60s and bank statements from 5 years. My security company didn't even issue P60s or P45s so I had to explain this in email to the new employer while showing them the letter from HMRC. I also worked since last year for a subcontractor for the new company which is quite silly as I've shown them the same details so it shouldn't be a issue. This company has provided me with a P60 for last year but this is all I have. What can I do?

Presumably your wages were paid direct into a bank account? Are you set up with online access for your bank,  if so, you'll be able to download past statements from there which will show the wages being paid.  I think many banks keep at least 6 years online for customers. If not, you'd need to speak to the bank.

You should still have been registered with HMRC. Your potential new employer needs to check that what you claim to have been doing is what you really were doing. Contact your bank for statements (you probably have to pay), add the P60 you've actually got and any payslips.

If you were only working weekends, what were you doing the rest of the time? If you were a student, then see if a college reference would suffice to prove you weren't in the nick or somewhere equally undesirable!
  • They can CRB check me I'm no criminal. That's all the work I was doing, yeah I was at home but it is what it is. Even if I waas registered with HMRC they can't provide me with anything even though I would send tax returns because I once registered as self employed with one job and I filed them but they telling me now they have nothing. I guess I could find some old bank statements but how many would I need. They asked me in the first to provide email:
    • Evidence from the beginning and end of each employment from 2015 to present ie Payslip, P60, P45, Bank statements showing a payment or by using the HMRC online service below
    • Evidence of periods of unemployment within the last 5 Years.  If in receipt of benefits please contact your job centre. If not in receipt of benefits please request bank statements or pension statements if in receipt of pension.
So  since I've also not been on benefits I'm not sure what I can really do. It doesn't make sense as I said I've worked for this new company through a subcontractor from June last year till I got furlourged early this year. They know of me I have a payroll number I'm still on the system. They already know I'm legit yet I have to go through this.

so you don't have a P45 even though you left employment.  i assume that is because you were not taxed?  why don't you have 5 years of bank statements?  do you mean you have thrown them all out?
it does seem odd that they have asked you for your bank statements.  i have never been asked for bank statements.  did they say why they want the bank statements?
  • I'm still with the security company on the weekends and will continue to do so but they wouldn't issue P45 they don't even do payslips. We get paid bank transfer weekly. I doubt I have bank statements from last year around the house let alone 5. They new job didn't ask exactly why I would need bank statements but I guess they want to see proof of income over the 5 years. The subcontractor(of the new company I've had interview with)kicked up a bit of a stink last year when they couldn't get hold of my employer, once I gave them the boss mobile they had him fill out a form emailed it back to them and they never bothered me.

if you are still working for the company on the weekends, then that would explain why they can't issue the P45.   technically speaking you are still employed by them.
i can't see why the new employer needs to see proof of income over the last 5 years unless they don't believe you were working at all and want to see wages as you state you have been working but have no evidence to show that you have been employed.  you can get the 5 years of bank statement if you ask your bank to send it to you.  they will charge you a small fee, like £30 or something like that.  they may even send it to you for free or print it out for you if you visit a branch.
  • So I sent the bank statements. The HR guy assured me on the phone that this would be enough. Then days later he kept asking me for character references and job references. I gave him my boss email he told me some how it would be "difficult" to get a reference this way. I've not heard nothing since last wednesday after he asked me for more information on my weekend job which I told him I did not have records. I gave details of the day job I did for a year with payslips etc and the HR has fgone silent. Should I ask them if I have the job:? the original guy who gave me the call seemed positive and it was just a matter of sending a few documents. The HR never picks up the phone so I don't know what to do its been one month since my interview.

Nothing lost by following up to see what the score is.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • Yeah but the HR guy don't answer phone so maybe I should try the guy who organised my interview from the start?
