Economy 7

I’m getting an electric car and wondered if I’d be better changing onto an Economy 7 tariff as I will be charging through the night?

  • I'm on an Economy 7 tariff (with Smart meter) with Bulb and just noticed that while my cheap rate runs from 12:30-7:30 my heaters stay on until 8:30 at the higher rate. Bulb say they can't do anything about this and I have no control over my storage heaters, has anyone else had this problem?

Assuming that your heaters are on a circuit that's switched by the meter (i.e.they're not programmable ones such as Dimplex Quantum that can work on a 24h supply) it's just the effect of Summer Time. They''ll also start at 0130.

OP, that would depend what percentage of your annual usage you can put through E7 at cheap rate. You are also going to need a 7kW wall charger that has a timer built in to start the charge, as you won't want to be plugging it in at midnight or 1am every time.
The downside is that all your other daytime usage will be at E7 peak rate prices. You need to do the maths. Work out how many kWh's you will need to put into it each charge, and how many charges (if not every night). So you need to know the battery capacity and your estimated mileage etc.
Typically, you need to use at least 33% of your annual kWh consumption on cheap rate to make E7 work, though it can be less. This is normally easily achieved by the use of NSH's and an immersion heater, but you may already have gas CH and DHW in place?
Even on standard rate charging, it'll still be about one third of the cost of petrol anyway.

  • Is it possible to have an economy 7 meter fitted?        Painter John,

I have e7 and have been told it's specifically used only for storage heaters, all other electric is standard =/ day/night rates.

Unless you have two meters, everything runs at "night" rate when it’s active. During "day" rate, the storage heaters have no electricity going to them.

In the house we just left we did washing, slow-cooking, showered/ bathed etc all on E7 .  When I  contacted Eon ( yes, I will be switching)  the receptionist told me I could have the E7 meter if I paid for it - I subsequently have not heard anything back.
    Thanks for trying

Your meter, smart or otherwise, neither knows nor cares what electrical devices are attached downstream. Whether you are currently running only your NSH's and immersion heater off E7, or everything during the cheap rate hours, will depend how it has been wired.

That's a bit confusing.  If there's only an E7 meter, then absolutely everything will be at cheap rate during cheap rate hours no matter how it's wired.
The only query is whether the NSHs and main immersion heater are wired to a separate circuit that's live only during the cheap rate period.
