Is today redundancy cut off

Hi all,

Title is self explanatory. I heard on L BC this morning today is the last day employees can make redundancies within the furlough scheme! Presuming this is because of the 45 day consultation period? Hopefully I'm not one of them.

    Title isn't that self explanatory.

It may be the last day that it can be done within the furlough scheme, but redundancies can - and will - continue to happen, particularly over the next few months.
  • Presumably should the companies no longer afford to keep employers after furlough ends, today will be the day you will find out.
  • It's not that clear cut. Employers will be taking a continual view of income versus costs and making the best decision.

There may well be a spike over the next few weeks, but there's never going to be a cut off date after which anyone can consider themselves 'safe'.

I run a business, and the situation changes day to day - money I thought I had coming in today might not appear, leading to redundancies in future etc.

There’s no ‘safe day’, someone could be brought back from furlough last month and be made redundant next month - it’s going to be a rough winter.

No safe day - we had to make a few redundancies but are keeping on as many staff as possible to try to save business. Will use every last available penny of credit to try to save business. If it works, great. If not, then we'll need to let the others go one by one as we continue to fail and end up in massive debt. No safety :(

45 day consultation period is for 100+ redundancies, so for less than that there's still time to do it within the furlough period.
  • Ah! Great.. This is usual info.
    Thanks

You have confused "employer" and "employee"
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

It's also 100 per workplace so a company making 40 redundancies in London, 40 in Birmingham and 40 in Manchester don't have to use the 45 day process even though the total across all sites is over 100.

Especially for businesses either in the travel industry or who have customers in the travel industry, given where you can and can't go on holiday within the UK is constantly changing, never mind Europe or beyond.  I suppose even if your job is at a company producing sun cream then you might face a bumpy winter if people aren't buying the product for winter sun breaks.
