Green tomatoes

What can I do with them? Not enough for chutney (and besides I have several jars already). They have gone that lighter green colour that means they are thinking about going red, but haven’t got any further than thinking.

Couple of optionsOld style, [my granddad's] shove them in a drawer lined with newspaper & waitEveryone on the internet includes popping bananas in, leave on window sillOnce they've started turning they will go red, it will be a race between ripening & shrivelling thoughGardener’s pest is chef’s escargot2

I've never tried them ( not enough green tomatoes after making Green tomato Chutney) but Fried Green Tomatoes seem to be a popular dish in the Southern States of America. Loads of recipes on line. They just seem to be slices of tomato dipped in flour, egg and seasoned breadcrumbs and then shallow fried. ( I did like the film Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe but I digress!)2

I tried making Nigella's moonblush tomatoes for the first time last night and can report that they are delicious and easy so here's a link to the recipe https://www.nigella.com/recipes/moonblush-tomatoes
Having tasted the results I reckon the salt/sugar combination shouldn't be changed but that you could vary the oil and herbs e.g. use up oil from sun dried tomato jars and dried oregano or a ready made blend that you know goes with toms. I used a metal roasting tin to do mine which was an easy clean this morning too. Happy browsing and sluicing, goldfinches.2 -
I must admit I found the idea of fried green tomatoes unappealing. But, what the heck, I tried it - and they are delicious.3

It's very early to give up on tomatoes. Remove all flowers, and give the ones of a usable size another 5 weeks or until there's a risk of frost in your area.

To @bouicca21 - you aren’t the only person with this problem. I don’t know what went wrong this year. I’ve got 5 tomato plants. Three are heavily laden with green tomatoes, while two barely have half a dozen between them. Only a handful have turned or started to turn red.
My friend grew 10 tomato plants this year and barely got two dozen tomatoes from them. Most are still green.Arthog said:It's very early to give up on tomatoes. If mine haven’t ripened by mid-October, I’ll follow your advice. Thank you.

I have been very lucky - picked another 1.5kg of red tomatoes yesterday. Total so far is over 9kg. One of the benefits of having a south facing garden.Be Kind. Stay Safe. Break the Chain. Save Lives. ⭐️2025 Savings Pot Challenge: As a monthly amount, running total = £379.00

I usually put all the green tomatoes in paper bags in my kitchen drawer when I’m stripping the plants at the end of the season. They ripen quite slowly depending on what stage they are at. I’ve had the really green ones ripe in time for Christmas Day in a prawn cocktail salad.2
