Nationwide student account proof of address

Hi, my son is due to start uni this month and wants an account with Nationwide.  As a single parent  I usually pay for everything so he has very little proving his address. They say he doesn't have enough evidence and they want a letter from his doctor confirming the address held for him. Unfortunately we moved 3 years ago and although he told the surgery, it seems they didn't update his records.  Without a bank account he can't apply 6student loans. Up until now he's had a Pocket accident account, but the bank says that's not enough.  Any ideas anyone please?

Take a look at the list published here (https://www.nationwide.co.uk/support/support-articles/manage-your-account/proving-your-identity)

At least one option there should be OK for you - an official letter from the university is usually quite easy, for example, as most have a self-service portal to generate something acceptable which you can print out.

I do appreciate the dilemma when your son is trying to open his first account; often it’s a case of no credit history so automated CRA checks fail, but equally limited financial responsibility so lack of bills etc to demonstrate proof of address.

Usually the easiest thing to do is use a passport for proof of identity and a driving license (can usually be provisional) as the proof of address. But this does rely on having both!

Edit: I’m not sure, but I think Pockit comes with a sort code and account number and supports BACS? So it would be OK to use to receive a student loan payment if getting a bank account is proving difficult.

Can he not get something from UCAS, University, HMRC or DWP?

Could he apply for a FlexOne and upgrade later?
  • If he has not got one get him to apply for a provisional driving licence.
Can't comment on Nationwide specifically other banks would accept this as single id - no other messing (other than getting a copy of his UCAS letter to show the bank).

The best bet would be to call HMRC and request a copy of his tax code easily done just make sure they have the correct address for him the number is 0300 200 3300.

  • You need to hurry on this, my sons first loan payment goes in on 28 September and the uni take his first rent payment on 1st October.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
