Repairing a flat roof

My sister has a flat roof garage and there is a hole in the roof.
I understand I need to buy a roll of ashphelt, as I covered my own shed a few weeks ago.
What type glue do I need and how likely is it to be a reasonable repair. I have a tin of paint, but will glue be brushed on, or trowelled on?
Would a pro use heated tar to seal the edges?

  • How big is the hole?  If its just a small tear, I've used Rooftrade Roof Sealer with good results.
  • Its a little less then a foot square, it has a brick over it for some reason.
Not sure how it was made, I haven't seen the actual hole, as I will need to make the roof safe and climb on top of it.

My parent's flat roof had a hole for a downpipe, to which the roof sloped.  Such a hole will be immediately apparent, being all wonderfully round and deliberate.

A professional is more likely to use a "torch on" felt. It has a layer of bitumen that is heated up with a big blowtorch and then laid down & pressed down with a roller The heat softens the bitumen, and the roller helps to make sure the patch is stuck down.
For a temporary repair, you could try some self adhesive flashing.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • I have done a small test patch on my own flat roof. My patch was only small, but I could not see the far edge. After applying numerous coats of black 'glue' over a few dry days, on inspection after some rain, the far edge was not sealed.
As the black tar 'glue' that I bought from Wickes was more like paint than glue. I am not working next week, so if we get a dry day, I will try to inspect the patch. Not easy when standing on the ladders.
