Hi there,
I’ve started receiving emails/ letters from SLC saying that I have nearly repaid my loan and in order to avoid over paying I should ring to set up a direct debit instead of it being taken from my salary. Has anyone else done this? Is it a good idea? Any advice?

Definitely a good idea. Otherwise you risk the salary deductions continuing for a few months after you have finished repaying and then having to wait for a refund.
