Green Home Grant

The new green home grant covers roof insulation. Does this mean it will cover the replacement of a glass conservatory roof with a hard insulated roof making the conservatory much warmer  in winter and saving energy costs.

I highly doubt that will be covered, the grants are to help with the cost of insulation, not replacing the whole roof.
  • Does anyone know whether the room in the roof insulation would apply to us creating a mezzanine space in the main bedroom?
  • The scheme will cover green home improvements including insulation of walls, floors and roofs, the installation of double or triple glazing when replacing single glazing, and low-carbon heating.
If double/triple glazing only qualifies when it's replacing single glazing, I guess it wont cover very much. More information in late September.

  • I was provisionally approved for this scheme and was given a list of 'Trust Mark' installers. I've called the first six on the list none of whom, for various reasons, are participating. One of them told me I could call all day and he doubted I'd find an installer registered for this scheme. Reminder, this list of installers came from Trust Mark itself. Great idea ruined by over officious Government requirements and as one installer pointed out to me by the time they were registered this short term scheme would be over.
  • I just got the following:

Due to the high number of customers applying for the Government Green Homes scheme we are unable to take on new enquires.
    Kind regards

and this is on day one of the scheme!

  • The scheme is a complete waste of money.  You need to have a primary job done to get a secondary one done.  I have single glazed windows and I am not allowed to have double under the scheme so I need secondary glazing but no primary measure. The website is useless and the staff there don't know what they are on about.  You cannot get through by telephone.

Sounds like a similar trend with recently government announced schemes or initiatives.... !
You would have thought they would have anticipated all this after the "fix your bike scheme"

Anyhow - do you think the scheme would cover a garage conversion (into an office space) or even an upwards extension?

I had no luck at all finding an installer who would pick up the phone. I think there's too many customers, not enough firms. Scheme looks a bit of a farce to me.
  • Government grant scheme a good idea in theory but...in practice it will preclude those of us who have already insulated our lofts, installed the latest energy efficient boilers, etc but want to change from single to double glazing, which is what we want to do. How many people will really want to spend what will still be a large capital outlay (even with the grant) for air or ground source heat pumps just to get that same amount for the windows? Like so many government 'good ideas' the majority of people will be excluded from this deal purely on cost still needed to shall out.  In the end we just decided not to wait to see what it would involve and went ahead and researched and sourced replacement double glazing anyway and, I have to say, glad we did otherwise we'd have wasted all this time waiting for the details of the scheme to emerge. As so often the case, too many hoops to jump through, so it's disappointing and will no doubt discourage those who maybe can't afford to replace windows if that's the only improvement they want to make.
