Just got this from easyjet, i thought just a 'face mask' was adequate?
Following a requirement from Italian authorities, it is compulsory for passengers from the age of 6 and above to wear a surgical disposable mask (or higher quality mask FFP2/FFP3). Failure to wear a disposable surgical mask will result in you being denied boarding.

  • I work as crew for a different airline.
We have been told that whenever flying to Italy we need to carry a surgical mask, in case we get “stuck” downroute and have to spend time in Italy, as they won’t accept a normal cloth face covering.
Italy is the only country I fly to where this applies.

Yes, you must get a surgical face mask. A normal face mask is not good enough for the Italian authorities.
We got a pack of 10 so we had some for the return journey and a few spares.
The surgical ones are readily available and inexpensive so worth getting although they were available at the airports if we'd been stuck.
  • I think you may be feeling this is more complicated than it is?  Surgical masks are basically paper but with bacterial filtration, readily available and are disposable so you generally buy in bulk but they are not very expensive.  I find them comfortable enough and prefer to the cloth ones.

If a surgical face mask is required then you must wear one.
You pretty much answered your question with the text you copied.
  • Something like this will do: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20x-KN95-FFP2-N95-Face-Mask-95-Hygienic-Face-Cover-Virus-Protection-Non-Medical/184323089162

If they've told you that's their requirement, then that's what you need.

Well I went into Boots and the ones they said were 'surgical' disposable masks only worked out at 50p each but you could only buy them in 50s!
  • How many of you traveling?   You will probably get through a lot anyway but if you really don’t want to fork out for 50 and you have time, shop around and look online.  Or you could take the chance of being able to buy at airport?  Not something I would want to chance though - just in case!  Better to be prepared than risk missing your flight if airport have run out for instance.  Up to you though.

just me, too late to buy online so just have to buy 50, I suppose they'll come in
  • have you tried other outlets? The pound shops for example?

Sure even my local Co-Op had them in smaller packets last time I looked.

Have they still got the ludicrous rule about no loose items of clothing in the overhead lockers as well ?
In force when I went last month.
