  • They can tell the truth. No one can be certain exactly what they will say. You could contact your old employer and ask what type of reference they would supply if you feel comfortable doing so.

How long has it been since you left and have you done anything else during that time?

    There's some great guidance here - https://work.chron.com/handle-negative-reasons-leaving-jobs-4643.html

Make sure you also mention what you said here - 'after working for them for 5 years i've never been late, had an absent day or had a disciplinary etc?'

    what put i resigned?
  • Is there any reason you can't pick up the phone to your ex employer and put the question? If nothing else you can then avoid awkwardness should you land an interview.

I think you mean 'stuck' on what to put for a reason, rather than 'unstuck'.

You have to be honest.  Your ex-employer will be expected to be honest, too - former employers are also expected not to make any negative comments when they give references for ex-employees.

I don't think that being ill is a negative reason for leaving employment.  If the job you are applying for is totally different to your last job, you could simply say that you left because you suffered from stress and that has made you realise that the best way forward is to have a change of career. (Or something similar.) And also, if possible and there is space, do mention your excellent five year record with your last employer.

If the job you are applying for is similar to the one you have left, then it may be that the same problem will occur somewhere down the line.

did you resign from your employment?  how long ago was that?
  • I would just put 'personal reasons' down. I wouldn't be tempted to put much else down as if the question comes up about sick days and attendance then you are genuinely creating a hole later on. I also don't think asking an ex. Employer to say a different version or putting words in their mouth to match really solves anything - I was ok to approach my former Employer from last November in January this year but it wasn't to ask them to lie, it was so it came as less of a shock I was actively seeking new work and was without the job I left them for some 2 months previous. They also verified the preferred method and address that a reference should go too as the line manager simply left days after me anyhow.
