SORN/TAX/INSURANCE HELP PLEASE

Looking for advice please. My parents have bought a newer car & declared SORN on the old one. The old one has an MOT and is registered in my Dad’s name. They have very kindly offered to give the old car to me and it’s sitting on their drive just waiting for me, but I don’t know what to do in order to be able to collect it and drive it away. I’ve driven for years but never had a car or insurance in my name. Many thanks, Melanie

Assuming you are taking on the ownership of the car and becoming the new registered keeper then you and your dad can do most of it online.
Dig out the log book V5C and do the transfer online https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
Tax it online using some details from the V5c form - https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax  If you are in no hurry then I am sure someone may be able to advise on the best time of the month to tax - possibly do all of this online on the first day of the month.
Insure it - have a look at cashback and comparison sites.
A valid MOT wont need to be transferred, its still valid for the new owner.

That’s great thank you. In no massive rush so 1st of the month should work out well. Cheers again 👍🏻

If you're new to owning your own car, bear in mind that the DVLA will send you a reminder when the tax is due, but don't send you a reminder for the MOT.  That's up to you to sort out.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
