Have tyres gone up in price?

In early/mid April I priced up a set of Michelin Crossclimates at roughly £90 a tyre. I remember comparing the SUV to the normal version, and reckoning about £360 for the tyres plus fitting. When I checked last night to get a new ball park, it's £125 a tyre. It's entirely possible that I originally priced on the regular version though I'm sure that SUV weren't significantly more expensive.

Before it's suggested, I know I could get cheaper tyres, but I've had Crossclimates on a previous vehicle and really rated them, so it'll be a case of adjusting my budget and delaying the purchase - the new tyres are a want, not a need.

My thinking is if I didn't price the wrong thing, or remember incorrectly, and prices have gone up, maybe prices will fall again. Or I could be going bonkers!

  • Prices of quite a few items have gone up recently due to supply shortages and high demand. Your tyres could be part of that.

    Hi OP
Almost everything has gone up and the excuse used is the virus. In part, that could be true but there are hardly any discounts around other than if you are buying a brand new or pre reg car.
Laptops, cctv, etc you are gain seeing reductions but like you said, tyres and more are up.
You are also hard pushed to find a discount code for servicing, etc.
You would have though hols abroad were cheaper and I'm not talking about the cheap booze one - possibly as hotels etc still closed staff laid off etc.
If you wish, try a fully fitted price may work out cheaper.
We used Asda tyres last when we needed a replacement tyre they were cheaper than the other big boys

Lemme think why all-season/winter tyres might have gone up as summer turns into autumn...
  • Every time the gov't 'prints' £Billions with QE, it reduces the value of the £ in your pocket. Eventually you realize when you try to buy something with it.
  • Oponeo and mytyres are worth checking along with what has been mentioned above.

If that were the case, then inflation would be much higher than it is.

Inflation is much higher than they admit.
Just do your weekly shop, every single thing has either gone up, or the packet size has shrunk, or both.

Yet inflation is still really low, I don't know how they do it. I've seen the list of items that they check the price of, and it should be impossible to keep returning such low figures.

I need to find out where they shop ;)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I've found the price of individual tyre makes and models can bounce around, just a case of needing to be flexible and shop around. Generally though they don't seem to have gone up too much.

One thing which has gone up is tyre sizes, typical cars used to have 14, 15 or 16 inch tyres now 17" is common and 19 inch or bigger is not unusual so the cost of replacing a tyre will be going up because you're buying a lot more tyre every time you buy one.

I don't think it's likely that the size of the wheels on the OP's car have changed markedly since April.

Yes everyone should be buying things with gold as you do.
