Looking for some advice please. A friend of my mum's who isn't at all computer literate went to a local travel agent in February to book a holiday to the Canaries for October.  The travel agent booked it all and she paid them the money. She called them the other day to see what her options were. The flights were booked via Ryanair but by the travel agent and the hotel booked separately (unsure if through another company or direct with the hotel). The travel agent said that they would be able to cancel but they wouldn't get any money back on the flights and only a credit note for the hotel to be used at the travel agents. Is this right?? If she booked the whole package through the travel agent are the travel agent's not responsible for the whole package regardless of who is providing the flights? Any help or information  would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • If the flights are going ahead and the hotel is open then no she would not be able to claim a refund from travel agent.  She would need to hope she has adequate insurance in place covering FCO advice but would strongly urge her not to cancel anything at moment as things can change before October as can FCO advice.
  • The travel agent is responsible for the whole package yes but if your friend is cancelling off her own back then she is bound by their usual cancellation terms. This close to departure it would more than likely result in the loss of over half the money, if not more.

    What company is it please?

It's a local company called Stewart Travel based in Ayr, South Ayrshire.

At the moment you need to self isolate for 2 weeks when you come back and they can't afford to do that as their work is saying that it would be unpaid. Which for her and her husband would constitute a month's wages.

That's very much a 'them' problem and not a 'travel agent' problem - if they can't afford to self-isolate then they'll forfeit the holiday.
They're not entitled to a refund or postponement; the travel agent, air carrier or hotel have done nothing wrong and don't have to refund.
