My friend has been on continuous furlough since it started and this month hasn't been paid. The employer is claiming that there is a delay but it's been two weeks now and they're struggling for money.

We have reason to believe that the employer is lying and someone hasn't done their job properly but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. Every other month has been paid around the same time. This is causing so much stress with bills to be paid and we're not getting anywhere, hmrc can't help either.

They should check their online tax account to see if it says anything about being paid.

Thanks we've checked that and the taxable income payments have been logged since the beginning of April up until now, so I guess the furlough money has been paid to the employer and they're doing something wrong

They need to speak to their employer again.
  • Yeah they're really not helpful and seem very disinterested to be honest. Just claiming they haven't received the money yet, load of crap

Sounds like they are having cash flow problems - is the company functioning at all ?
  • Could someone in payroll / accounts fallen ill? Holiday? Someone with just no memory skills. Also the size of Employer could be a factor. Had a colleague slightly out of their depth who forgot to do the business all important credit control as they forgot the process and thought it could be left a little while without speaking up. You could write a strong stern letter but it may not help relations. Citizens Advice may help.

Hardly lying if the employer has said that they are struggling for money. Furlough is reimbursement of wages paid. If the business has cashflow problems then potential outcome could be terminal.

That isn't the case. They are separate. You run the payroll which generate the pay slip and reports to HMRC (which is what you can see in her tax account). The employer then submits the furlough claim- you have no way of telling if this has been done from your personal tax account.

They may have forgotten and claimed the furlough from HMRC late, they may have cash flow issues.
