How much electricity should an empty house use?

I've been keeping a close eye on my electricity meter lately because I have a feeling we're using more than we should be. Just returned from holiday and worked out that my empty house has used approx 2.4 units per day. The appliances using electricity have been:
- Average sized fridge freezer
- Two lamps (60w bulbs) turning on for 3 hours per day
- An internal security camera running the whole time
- Accidentally left the TV and microwave plugged in as well.
Does that sound about right??

Sound quite reasonable, almost a bit low.
And why on earth are you using wasteful 60W incandescents instead of 6W LEDs??
  • Oops, they are 6W, I misread the bulb...good that it sounds ok though.

2.4 kwh a day is 100w an hour.

26w of that are your lights for three hours.Fridge freezer will be the largest user.  A boiler will use a few watts etc etc.

When we go away we get through about 3.5kwh a day - large upright freezer (we usually turn the fridge off), router, Sky box, a couple of powerline adapters, two security cameras, two clocks and two 20w LED security lights which switch on and off at random. Everything else is shut off or unplugged even the heating unit unless its in the winter.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Nope, 100W is 100W full stop.
2.4kWh over 24h corresponds to an average consumption of 100W.  Two 6W bulbs for three hours would consume 36Wh.

Surely it depends on how big a crop of cannabis that you are growing and more fool you if you haven't bypassed the meter

Should it be of interest when we leave the house for a while (during summer when no heating is involved) we invariably find electricity usage is 1.8 to 2KwH per day. Things left on are a 15 year old 375 ltr A+ chest freezer, fridge, TV on standby, Humax PVR, 3 Echo dots and the bb router.
