Looking for some advice please. In February we booked and paid in full for flight and hotel in NY in October with Expedia. As it stands at the moment the flight is going ahead and the hotel booking is non-refundable but as UK citizens we're not allowed entry to USA. We bought insurance when we booked the package with Expedia. Are we entitled to a full refund from Expedia, would we need to claim through insurance or do we need to try Aer Lingus and the hotel?  Thanks

  • Hi, we booked NYC in January for October but booked the hotel through hotels dotcom and flights directly with KLM.

We got the hotel payment refunded almost immediately, despite the non-refundable rate, but according to hotels dotcom this was down to Marriott hotels own policy and not theirs (yay Marriott).

The flights are a nightmare. So far they are still running despite the entry ban. KLM won’t offer any solution other than to rebook (which doesn’t work for us) and our travel insurance doesn’t cover us choosing to cancel, despite also not covering us if we did travel because it’s against government advice! My only hope at the moment is that they do cancel it or a S.75 claim via the credit card company.

Good luck, I hope Aer Lingus are better,  it’s a total minefield.

You might need to wait till closer to the departure date to see what’s happening.
I got a refund on a non-refundable hotel with Expedia with very little difficulty but that was after one of my flights had been cancelled so the whole package was void.
The flights took a lot longer as Lufthansa were determined to offer credit notes - 3 months or so, several phone calls and the mention of a chargeback got the cash from Expedia in the end.
FWIW, Expedia didn’t tell me my flight was cancelled, I started getting emails asking if I wanted to cancel, to which the answer was definitely not, so I checked the flight myself.
When in October are you meant to be going?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • We're meant to be going 16th Oct. The flight has already been changed but Expedia have still not advised us of this or updated the itinerary. I found out when I couldn't manage the trip on Aer Lingus website
