looking for a little advice please.
I’m self employed and have had my earnings drop because of covid. I successfully claimed the first SEISS. But even after claiming it, I was struggling and so I cashed in a small pension, to help me financially, (I’m 55 years old) Because I cashed in the pension (did it end of July) would I still be able to claim the 2nd SEISS, as I read through the eligibility criteria and it said something 50% of earning should come from earnings not pension, or maybe I have misunderstood. Any help or advice gratefully received as I’m so confused and don’t want to make a problem for myself later on if I do make a claim.

The pension you cashed in won't affect your eligibility to claim the 2nd grant. The criteria for this is the same as the first one and you need to be adversely affected on or after 14th July.

The 50% test is only applied to the years on which the grant is based, and cannot take account of any income after 5 April 2019. You should be aware that the claiming of a SEISS grant is being used by some banks as an excuse to refuse mortgage applications being made in the future. As you have already claimed the first, it may be that claiming the second will not make it any worse.1

Also looking for some advice please. My Son is an undergraduate student funded on a student loan. But as a musician he earns a small amount of money occasionally teaching or performing, and so he is self employed. He has submitted accounts for 2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19. His earning are quite small, but his earning have been nearly zero during covid. He didn't apply for the SEISS 1 but I'm trying to persuade him to apply for SEISS 2 - does he qualify?0

Did he trade in tax year 2019/20? Did he submit his self-assessment return by 23/4/20 for tax year 2018/19? If yes to both, then he can apply. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
