Confirmation of payee not working

I have a Starling bank account and people are having difficulty paying into it since COP was introduced. My name is not recognised. I'm guessing it's something to do with the apostrophe in my name. Starling has confirmed that my details are correct, but when I try to pay in from Nationwide, I get the message that it doesn't work. I have an outstanding bill that needs paying into the account and those people are getting the same message. Starling (of course!) say it's not their problem. Ant suggestions gratefully received.

You can over-ride CoP.  It's merely a warning that the wording of the name doesn't match.  It doesn't prevent the payment.

And, if anyone's in any doubt, ask them for a test payment of £1.50 before the full payment.

The "problem" would be with the sending bank, not the receiving one. It's their code that checks your name.

But as Zanderman already said, there's no reason why people shouldn't be able to pay you.
  • I have never had an issue with this with the Halifax, it even comes back with the full accurate name and says do you still want to pay it.
  • Haven't they all been given extra time to get this working as it doesn't currently? I have this transferring between my own accounts.
As long as the Sort Code and Account Number match the name is just another check. It just doesn't work atm.

Even if the checking would work perfectly for all payments - which it never will, for e.g. collective accounts such as NS&I, HMRC and many Building Societies, the check would be almost completely useless for me as 99% of my transactions are payments to my own accounts. They obviously all have the same name, so I need another means of distinguishing between the various accounts. Unless there is a nickname for the payee with every bank, and unless that nickname is displayed in the payee list, I will just continue with my current naming convention and ignore the COP checks.
  • I think it's a nice idea. Still won't stop scammers, and just makes more clicks in the process of moving Money about.
    Check twice, cut once.
