E O N Smart meters

Options
I have my gas and electric as duel fuel from EON. About tree years ago i received a letter from  eon saying my gas meter needed changing. At this time i had a classic metal gas meter that is fitted to the front of the property in the ground. They came and changed the meter, i was expecting it to be like for like. I wasn`t told that they were putting a smart meter in place of it, and have recently found out that it was a Smet 1.  I have had to have it replaced twice for not working, having a blank screen for me not being able to give a customer reading.
the first meter lasted about 10months the second one lasted 6mths. I have been in touch with EON the last couple of days and told them that the gas meter is not working again. They said i needed  a Smet 2 gas meter fitted plus a smart electric meter fitting also at the same time. I told them that i didn`t want  any smart meters at all. IT as been arranged for a gas fitter to come and change the meter on18/9/2020. Can they not estimate what gas i use from the previous years readings. I don`t need no smart meter to tell me how much Gas and Electric i am using, i am very frugal with these. I am debating weather to cancel the appointment???. What would your advice be on this matter.
Regards Sheila

It's highly unlikely that Eon will revert to a 'Classic gas meter, as they fulfilled a Govt. driven quota by fitting a Smart Gas meter.

However, you do have a beef with Eon:
A Smart gas meter is battery powered which produces a weak wireless signal, but this usually good enough for it's readings to be transmitted to the nearby Smart Electric meter, which is mains powered.
To fit a Smart gas meter without changing the Elec meter to a Smart model makes no sense - It doesn't benefit Eon as they don't get regular gas readings and it doesn't benefit the customer as they still have to give manual readings - The only thing it does is get a Gold Star for Eon for filling the Govt. quota.

Frankly, I think your best bet is to let Eon fit the Smart Elec meter - This way both the Elec and Gas reads will go directly to Eon, but as you are aware, Smart meters can die so keep a log of your own readings.
What make and model were the Smart Gas meters that failed ?

If you cancel the appointment, you will still have a broken gas meter, and no way to tell how much gas you're using.
Without readings, Eon will keep producing estimated readings.  You will have no way to tell if those estimates are correct.  If the estimates are too low, then when you finally do get a new meter, they will hit you with a big bill that you have to pay immediately.  If they are too high, you're paying too much and giving an interest-free loan to Eon.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Sheila love, there's nothing to be afraid of wrt getting the latest gen smart meters. I had smets2 meters installed last year by E.ON and they're working flawlessly - even after I moved to EDF a month or two ago. However if it makes you feel better, throw the IHD in the bin and manually take readings from the smets2 meters every month and submit them to E.ON.

    Morning pickles0310,

I'm really sorry to see that you've had a couple of meters that have stopped working. I would also advise you to keep your appointment as you need working meters.

Thanks all for the comments on the thread, I do miss my thanks button.

    As
dogshome has said, it'll mean we will get your meter reads, but you can also keep a log of your reads for your own records.

We're here to help if you need us
    :)

    Thank you

    Helena
