Second SKY box

Hi everyone,
I understand that I can get an additional box from sky to watch a different program on another TV. Is this box only available from sky and is it only on subscription? I would prefer if I can buy it from a retailer rather than pay an additional fee to sky. Can anyone please advise.

sky do multiroom where you pay an extra 10 quid or so a month and get channels on a second box, but i think you need to have that box in the first place.
alternatively buy a reconditioned box, cheaper and probably as you say available through a retailer. i even think sky offer recon boxes too.

If you want to watch all channels, you will need Sky multi-room. If you only want the free to air channels on the second box, a second hand box, cable and a multi output LNB can be used and fitted by most DIYers. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

If you do that, sky will come out and fit the lnb (the bit on the end of the sattelite) which has four connecters, (2 for skyplus), then you get to keep your original box and put that somewhere else, like it was said earlier though if you don't pay sky for multiroom and get an extra card, you will only be able to watch the freeview channels.
If thats all your wanting in the first place, why not just get a freeview box, places like asda/lidl etc do them for less than 20 quid now.0 -

Unfortunately, I'm not in a freeview area, so sky is my only option. I'm a bit reluctant to pay sky £10.00 a month for what may be the occasional use. I'm not sure what I would need and where to get a second box. Can someone please explain what I would need, to get free to air channels in a second room through the sky satellite, but without involving a sky subscription.0 -
espresso has pretty much covered it in his post already.
You need to check you have a spare LNB output on your dish.
You'll then need the cable you run from the dish to the second room.
You can pick up a standard Sky box from lot's of places, even ebay.
Without a Freesat card you won't get Ch4 or Ch5 and maybe a few others.
A Freesat card is £20 and gives you all the Freesat channels.Dave. :wave:0 -
I know this is old, but my question fits. I use sky for freeview (weak freeview signal so took Sky up on an offer for a year and then cancelled).
If I can pick up a 2nd hand sky plus box cheap, fit (/get a local Ariel guy to fit) quad LNB/wiring and get another viewing card, do i then get the spyplus functionality (for available channels) for free?
I.e. can I just use it as a cheap HDD recorder without any subscription?
All the free view channels are great! Who needs Sky?
PS Twin/Quad LNBs are less than a tenner on ebay for anyone in the same boat.0 -

And you don't get freeview through a dish, you get it through your aerial.0
