New combi drill - Makita or Dewalt?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a combi drill, I was thinking either Makita or Dewalt? Purely DIY so I guess a single battery would be fine, and I'd like it to include either a drill / screwdriver set or happy to buy suggested quality sets.

There's so many models I have no idea where to start. Budget around £100 - 150. Maybe something like this?

Wickes: Makita DHP453FX12 18V Cordless Combi Drill 1 X 3.0Ah Li-Ion LXT Battery With 101 Piece Drill And Driver Set

or

Argos: Makita G-Series Cordless Combi Drill 74Pc Set - 18V

or

B&Q: DeWalt XR 18V 1.3Ah Li-ion Cordless Combi drill 1 battery DCD776C1-GB

It's only for some odd jobs round the house e.g. drilling into brick to put up security cameras, fixing stuff round the house etc. but I wanted to buy a decent quality brand.

Thank you!

It does not really matter which one you get, they are both decent mid market brands. If you already have ( or planning to get some later ) tools of one, get the same as batteries will fit and you can get tool only ( no batteries or charger needed and it's quite a bit cheaper that way ), otherwise it really is up to you, whatever is on offer or you like the design etc. In fact, for occasional odd job around house you might as well buy Ryobi brand as they  are normally cheaper than those 2 mentioned yet it's still more than adequate for odd job as a DIY...   Stay away from the cheapest nastiest end of the market ( silverline, cheapest eBay stuff...  )  and no point to pay hilti, festool and similar  prices for occasional diy job either , anything mid market will be fine.

both of those brands are OK. Blue bosch are also worth a look. I'd go for whatever's on offer at the time. I had an email from screwfix yesterday advertising a Dewalt combi with a couple of extra batteries for around £150 which seemed like an OK deal.

    This one - https://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcd785p2t-sfgb-18v-5-0ah-li-ion-xr-cordless-combi-hammer-drill/150jr

I definitely wouldn't get the Dewalt listed in the OP's posts, it only has a single 1.3Ah battery.

Don’t buy the Makita G series. The batteries are not compatible with their main line of LXT tools. And don’t worry about drill bits being included. Just allow £20 to buy a decent set.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

  • Cheers all, I'm now considering this:
Powertoolworld: MAKITA DHP453FX12 18V LXT COMBI DRILL INC 1X 5.0AH BATT & 101 PC ACCESSORY CASE
Although the only minor annoyance is it doesn't seem to include torx attachments.

i used to have 18V Makita had 3 (same model) in 7 years due to stopping working, just got a Dewalt 18V with 4amp batteries goes well (DCK266M2T 18v ) but chunk needs good turn to lock drillbit
i would look at there makes (not the above) that use compatile batteries so you are not tide in to one brand,
are Ryobi batteries same as another brand ?

The batteries are usually not compatible between different makes, although you may be able to find an adapter. That first tool you buy is a big step, as you tend to get locked in.

You do only get one battery though. At least with the Dewalt deal I linked to earlier you get two 5.0ah batteries, which alone are worth over a £100. Not saying it's a better drill though.

If you want a Makita though then for £30 more than the one you're looking at you could get this one - https://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-dhp485ste-18v-5-0ah-li-ion-lxt-brushless-cordless-combi-drill/566jr , the advantages being it has a brushless motor and a spare 5.0ah battery.
