Downpipe and gutter overflowed

Hello All
During a recent, albeit brief, downpour (as bad we've ever had here), the downpipe coming from the roof of my house gushed over the extension roof where it empties and then overflowed the gutter on the extension, to the extent that the backdoor looked as through it were in a waterfall. All the gutters are clean and in good order but I'm not keen on having the downpipe empty onto the extension roof as it does, although the lead beneath it presumably save the roof tiles from the worst of it. It would be difficult and unsightly to re-route the downpipe to the drains so I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to how I could slow or disperse the water over the extension roof, or guard against the extension guttering overflowing to the same extent. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You need to check the downpipes for any blockage, which is the most likely cause of the overflow you describe.  It may have cleared itself but you certainly shouldn't allow it to continue.  Fitting gutter guards would prevent the same happening in the future.

Mine does that in really awful downpours, I don't see it as a problem. No gutter set up is going to cope with some of the downpours we have nowadays.

Deep flow gutters can help in these situations.
Some people have used these, although probably not in your case.

  • Thanks for the recommendations all. I will look into re-siting the downpipe and using that spreader, but as has been said, it may be nothing there's nothing to be done with the downpours we seem to get nowadays.

An alternative I have seen is to install some lead flashing on the extension roof, below the downpipe, with the bottom edge of the flashing turned up, so that the water is slowed down and spread sideways.
It's the sort of thing you'd want a proper roofer to do.  Get it wrong and you'd be channeling water into the extension below.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Would a hopper help/be feasible where the water gushes down the extension roof and over-shoots the gutter?
