Why specifically vanguard? have you compared them to other EM type funds? Accumulative performance, weightings that suit your strategy?

Don't limit yourself to just VG. Although I held their developed Ex UK fund previously, I switched to a more active fund which hopefully will be better in the long term.

I chose a pacific ex Japan fund instead for my portfolio, personal preference
I only mentioned Vanguard as I have my investments solely with them, and I came across this fund only the other day so thought I'd mention it.

Also has low ongoing cost 0.14%, and has performed pretty well so far (although past performance etc, etc, etc).

Care to mention any others that rival the equivalent Vanguard fund?

I've come top realize that low OCF is just part of the picture. The fund managers, the sector the fund has, geography e.t.c is also important.

Take a look at SMT, BG  American fund or Fundsmith as example. Similar in what they buy for low cost trackers.  But it is personal preference and own strategy
I will hold some low cost trackers, but will likely hold also active funds

What you say is true, and for someone like yourself who has experience/knowledge, other similar funds are more suitable for you.

However, for the inexperienced/novice investor, they could do a lot worse than pick Vanguard, as many others have said in the past.

Nothing wrong with having low cost trackers, indeed being a passive investor will beat those day traders in the long run generally, however nothing wrong with diversifying your portfolio and considering active fund choices, sure the OCF will increase, but hopefully so will the yield.
