e-ON harassing for money on per-paid Meter
Hi Team
I moved into a property in Hayes in 2010. This property was fitted with a pre-paid meter for Gas and Electricity. I was using a key to top up my Electricity and a card for the Gas. I have a family with kids, so my top-up was always high with a min of £40-80 on both. January 2020. I moved out of the property and I handed over the key and card to the Landlord. Since it was per-paid meter, I suppose I do not have any bills to pay to e-ON as it was topped up every time, for Gas and Elect. In 2016 during a grid failure the electric meter in the house failed and I had to call e-ON to get it replaced, we were in Dark with for more than 6 hrs. When the meter was replaced, I was given a new Key and was told it had £10 in it to be used. In the old meter which failed, I had £24 in Cr which I lost, and I was told that I could claim if I had the receipt of the top-up.
When I left the property, it had £15 for Elect and £18 for Gas as Credit on the meter. As we settled into our new home, I realised that I had an online account with e-ON and so, I logged on and cancelled it as I was not more with e-ON and I am not using it. Since then, I have been receiving text messages to pay the bills. I was stunned that why would I need to pay?
I went to e-ON's web site and chatted with an online agent, I asked why they are sending me this txt mgs asking to pay else they will get a third party to get the money. The agent chatted with me and asked when I moved out the of the property and about the meter failure which I mentioned. She said she will get back to me via e-mail and nothing happened after that, it’s been 3 weeks now. I have started getting the txt msg again.
Appreciate if the members of the forum can please, advise how
to deal with this

George

If you didn't tell E.On that you were leaving then the standing charges will have continued. As you didn't top up again, your account will have drifted further and further into debt. The same thing would have happened if you had moved out, left the place locked and empty, stopped paying the rent but didn't tell the landlord, you'd now be in rent arrears.0

Did you get anything from your landlord confirming end of tenancy? If not can you get something to confirm your tenancy and when you moved out.
Whilst you should have told the energy company at the time - after all someone could have moved in and both used your credit and then kept asking for emergency credit. For now, if you can prove the dates of your tenancy then they should recalculate any final bill from that. They may then bill your landlord if it was empty for a while (though if someone else moved in your LL can show that)0 -

Thank you for the comments already, wish I still had a thanks button.
I'm really sorry we didn't get back in touch when we said we would, that isn't on and I apologise.
I agree with the others, we need to be contacted so we're aware that you have moved out. We may ask for a copy of the tenancy agreement and your final meter reads, this is so we can close the account accurately. Otherwise standing charge will still be being charged.
We have a pre-payment home moves department that deal with pre-payment properties and they are the ones to get in touch with, so they can look at getting this sorted out for you. So please do get back in touch.
Thank you
