Reconditioning and engine

I drive a 2012 bmw 320i and the engine has seized due to the thrust washers failing on the crankshaft. I’ve been told metal has gone through the oil line. I am struggling to find an engine and was wondering if reconditioning the engine would be the next thing?

Yes, but rebuilding it PROPERLY will cost more than buying something like this...

...and breaking it, using the engine in yours, then flogging the surplus bits off.
  • Don't fall for the many 'engine reconditioning' scams (google it). Probably these days it is not cost-effective to properly recondition an engine which is a great shame as it used to be common practice years ago.

Taking your car to a garage is scary. Getting your engine reconditioned is terrifying. You've no idea what they will actually get up to.

Scotty Kilmer (on youtube) has a low opinion on using a re-conditioned/re-built engine especially on complicated beasts like BMW. Buyer beware!
  • Years ago it used to be easy - I reconditioned a Morris Minor engine myself with my dad's help, but I wouldn't recommend having a Beemer engine reconditioned these days. Everything is so much more complicated.

I'd counter this by saying there are professional 'proper' engine re-conditioners around, but they aren't cheap!
  • I'm afraid if the engine is shot, then you need to speak to someone in the recycling business. I think scrap metal fetches about £80 per ton max theses days.

Ok back to the main topic op, there seems to be a lot of engines on ebay or even at breakers yards
i just bought a audi 1.9 tdi bxe engine last week as the car we are working on (a3 )'s cambelt snapped the lad who's car it is didnt want to scrap it so opted to have a used engine put in, it hasnt worked out bad for him as the engine cost £950 for a breaker with 3 months warrenty plus labour plus he has all the old ancillaries from his old engine such as injectors, turbo, etc....   car is worth approx £5k so worth doing imho, what is you car fetching fully working.
