Plus many manufacturers have 'recommended/authorised installers'.There are independent engineering consultancies that advise on waste water management but are not connected to any of the manufactures. The few I've looked at seem to have their 2 or 3 preferred manufacturers (all different to each other!).Chap visiting this week luckily is an authorised installer for both the system my neighbour prefers, as well as the system I'm inclined towards. But he's unlikely to recommend any others which for all I know might be a better option.(apologies to OP- I seem to have well and truly hijacked the thread which is bad form...)

Thanks for the inputs...Since I am new to this area my lack of basic information is shown in my posts especially on how often emptied etc.I think sensible option is understand current situation & cost implications and then proceed once sale can be agreed. I am glad that more information came out in this forum not felt anyone hijacking it at all.
AdrianC,
Since cost is not shown on site, do you know full purchase & installtion cost of a system like 'Ensign Ultra'..? ~5K or ~10K??

Ours is a 6-man, and was c.£2.5k for the tank itself. Installation of JUST the tank was probably similar - it's literally just dig a big hole, put it in, plug it in, fill it in.
Needs a 230v power supply, and the outlet is just a single pipe. The theory is that what comes out is clean enough to be drinkable...1 -
Thanks a lot for this info.0

Chap we had round this week started by saying the choice of tank was probably around 30% of the total cost (ballpark). Installation costs depend hugely on where the tank is (ie length of pipes from house to tank, and then on to drainage field or other outflow (ditch, pond etc if using a treatment system). And size of drainage field (which can add considerable cost) depends on type of soil (how quickly water seeps though) and number of people being serviced, which depends on Building Regs, not actual occupancy (ie 4 bedroom house = 6 people) even if you live alone.Whether going for a septic tank or treatment system, get one with a meaningful warranty ie 10+ years. The Ensign Ultra seems to cost around £2,278 + VAT (plus installation) for 6 persons.0

Yes the new rules are applicable to old systems in most circumstance. They need to be upgraded accordingly.
