The OP here is long gone after only posting here. I just wanted to make a comment that it's disappointing to read through threads and then never get resolution.

Another thread where a landlord posted that he had avoided being charged up to 3x for not protecting a deposit because he had unilaterally returned the original deposit. There was one more post where he was confused that the tenant had return the deposit, refusing it as full and final, and then the landlord never posted again.
