I would go for downsizing as well but the house I live in is one of the cheapest on the market in the area so I am unlikely to find a smaller house that I like with enough equity to make it worthwhile.
On top of that I like where I live.

We won't need to do any equity release - we both have good pensions and savings - but we do have a £300K+ mortgage-free house and no children to leave it to.
We do have nieces and nephews 'with expectations' but we haven't had so much as a  Chrismas card from them for over 20 years......
We don't want to downsize - we love our home and it has scope for a stairlift etc should we need that in the future.
That said, we haven't ruled out equity release to pay for luxuries, such as a cleaner and a gardener.

I’ve also heard of someone who, on being given a terminal diagnosis, ran up large debts on cards and overdrafts in order to take a ‘holiday of a lifetime.  A renter too, so probably ended up with a negative estate, not that he would have cared.
    Going out in style
