They were lying - they're obliged under the DD Guarantee to make a full and immediate refund, and they can obviously only do that once the DD has already been taken! Glad it's sorted now though....rich112 said:

Make a formal complaint about the misleading information - this is a staff training matter.

Absolutely especially as this is MSE and you can get paid at least £100 for moving to another bank. Just to double check - was this definitely a Direct Debit, as opposed to a Continuous Payment Authority on your debit card?
(When you set it up did you provide your sort code and bank account number [which would mean it's a DD], or did you provide the long number on your debit card and it's expiry date etc [which would mean it's a CPA])
