About two months ago I went to my local Nationwide branch (converted from being a Portman branch) and said I would like to open a Flexaccount. They said they could not do it in that branch but would forward my application to head office which they did.
Several weeks later i had heard nothing so I popped into the Nationwide branch and was told that there was a delay of 4 to 6 weeks. I left it another few weeks but still nothing so I went back into the Nationwide branch and said that they were now setting up Flexaccounts in that branch. They checked thier system and could find no reference to my previous application so assumed it had got lost somewhere so asked me to do a new application but unfortunately the relevant Nationwide computer system was down so she said she would sort it the next day and I would get the paperwork from head office in about 5 days !!!

Apply Online instead - from within internet banking - fourth tab from left.
It is a bit laborious with the questions they ask and there is a pesky 'error list' at the end which tells you what to attend to but does not take you back there unfortunately - and you have to navigate the app form via the side menu/list.
At the end you will have a saved application and they cannot then 'lose' it if you make a note of the reference. It's always there when you sign on and go back later.
I applied for a Flex on 24/11/2007 it seems but I've had not response yet (still a bit too soon) and the application was one I had started in 2002 it said! But never completed! However you do apply therefore, expect some further processing delay
Good luck.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0
