Using maps for crafts

I've got a bunch of old maps that I was hoping to use for crafting, but the creases in them are proving difficult to smooth out. I've had some cut out pieces in the middle of some heavy books for a few weeks, but that hasn't helped much. Have also tried ironing them, to no avail.  People seem to use maps for bunting but I'm not sure how when there's big creases in them ...
Does anyone use maps? How do you get the creases out, or do you just have to work around them?

Some creases will have town or stretched the paper fibres and won't go away.  Soaking the paper and then drying it flat under pressure can help a lot, though I have never done this to a map specifically.  Depending on what you want to do, gluing two back to back with the creases in different places might help.
