Bath to walk in shower?

My wife is having difficulty in climbing into the bath to have a shower.
We never have baths just showers from the thermostatic shower powered from our gas combi boiler.
Would you get rid of your bath and put in a shower cubicle and roughly how much would it cost and how much disruption would there be?

  • Would I do this? Yes, if mobility is becoming an issue, no question - walk-in showers are great.

Make it large enough to take a seat, and if you think you may require wheelchair access in the future, consider a 'wet room' type instead - ie a shower floor that's flush with the rest of the room. The latter will cost more, tho', so you need to make a judgement on when you might want this, and if you'll have moved beforehand.

Cost of 'walk-in' shower? How long's a piece of string. One with a low threshold tray (ie you still need to step up a little) and large plastic shower wall panels and a glass sliding door could be doable for less than £1k. A completely flush-to-the-floor shower, fully tiled will cost more - I dunno, around £2k?

You really need to get 2 or 3 recommended local bathroom fitters out to discuss and quote. Listen to what they say, and note carefully how well they listen to what you want.

Disruption? Yup - forget having a bath or shower for a few days... Can you still use your loo? Yes - as long as they cover their eyes. That's just one of the Qs to ask them - 'how long will it take'. Plastic wall panels and a normal shower tray will be a much faster job. A fully-tiled shower takes much long - it's a bigger job, but also adhesives and grout need to dry fully.

    The above is very 'ballpark'...

We did it several years ago, make sure the step into the shower isn't too high as some installers put the waste trap above the floor which can lead to this.  Also make sure the waste is easy to clean and lay the floor before putting the tray in.   We went for a good size one with a hinged door as previous sliding door showers were mould traps in the runners.
This is almost identical to the one we bought.   Ebay  27085598256
  • I would do it if I had no concerns about selling the property on. If its a family sized property, I think a bath is expected and the hassle of installation can put many off.

And yes, it is disruptive but it shouldn't really take more than a week to have it installed and fully tiled. This is where a second toilet and some wetwipes might help out!
