I bought a car two years ago from a second hand car dealership, i seem to remember the garage registering the car in my name as i bought it.
Fast forward two years and i cannot find my V5C form / log book. It's possible that i received it and lost it.
Is it also possible that the car was never registered in my name and...in theory could have incurred numerous speeding / parking tickets that i am not aware of?
I'm trying to call the DVLA but it is not possible to reach them currently. I don't know how to check.
If anyone can shed light on the process of registering a car when you buy it, i would very much appreciate it.
Thanks

I'm confident that if the previous owner was receiving speeding tickets they would have dobbed you in by now.

The DVLA shouldn't tell you who the RK is - data protection.
Easiest thing is just to apply for a new V5C.
As far as the process goes, the dealer should advise DVLA of the new keeper, either online or by sending off the old V5C. He should also give you the green section 6 of the V5C, which presumably you've also lost? The new V5C should arrive within a few days (in non-Covid times).
  • How have you been taxing it?

You buy car.  Previous owner or dealer sends off V5 transferring to you.  They either give you the new keeper slip, V5C, for you to tax it or maybe they tax it for you using that slip.  A few weeks later you receive a new V5 in the post.  Look here https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax  and at the bottom of the page is the date the last V5 was issued - does that tie up with the date you bought the car ?  Have you been taxing it ? Have you been receiving the tax reminders ? That link will also show the current tax status and MOT date.  If you can't find the V5 you need to pay for a new one https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book, a bit late to say you never received it to get it free.

How have you taxed the car for the last two years without the V5C...? Have you had V11 reminders? If so, it's in your name.

Look at https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ - it won't tell you who is the keeper, but it will tell you when the last V5C was issued. Does that tally with when you bought the car?
  • Thanks very much for replies...the date corresponds! i must have lost the form, will apply for a new one but can rest easy while it takes them however long to send me a new one!
