Dahlia Name

Hi, does anyone know the name of this Dahlia. It grows to about 5 feet tall, and has large purple or purple and white scraggy flowers. (I do like the flowers though) the flowers are about 6 to 10 inches across. Thought I would ask the clever gardeners on here

  • Not a clever gardener myself but is it a dahlia purple taiheijo? 🐈
Just my opinion, no offence 🐈
  • Don't think it's that one. The best I have found so far is named Michael Presson. But this is only showing as just a purple flower, so not sure. I've had it six years now and it has always been the same. Thanks anyway

It might not have a name. Every year I raise a few dahlias from seed collected from likely suspects, keep what seem like the better ones and sell the surplus. I'd guess other dahlia fans might do similarly.
I would probably definitely have sold that one.
  • Thanks Davesnave, Must admit it is one of my favourites. I bought it about 6 years ago, and never kept the packaging. Probably from an end of season sale. Loving your replies and advice on this forum. Keep up the good work and advice

It's just my work-out to keep those half-dozen brain cells that are still left, active. Gardening advice can be a little dull sometimes, so I try to inject a bit of humour now and again.

Flower variations like that are usually the result of a virus so you may have a unique plant there.
I'd be propagating it to make sure of its survival.

With dahlias, I find it important to evaluate. I don't just say, "That's a pretty flower!" and keep it, though if it's really different, I probably would.
I get lots of pretty flowers, but often the foliage lets the plant down, or it's too leggy, or it stops flowering quickly and has a rest.
An orange waterlily type dahlia I produced last year isn't remarkable for colour, but the leaves are nice, it hasn't gone leggy and it's produced about 3x more flowers than the others around. That's one I will keep.
