Moved into a property with lots of issues

    It's been a while since I rented, but I've lived in places which were fine other than being dirty - and scrubbing everything down was part of making it feel as though it was mine. Very satisfying.

    Conversely, I once had a new tenant move in immediately the previous one had moved out. It was all handled by the agent, so I didn't get a chance to inspect or anything. Apparently she had a huge list of complaints (light bulb not working, there were spiders in the understairs cupboard etc) and the agent had to explain to her that things like light bulbs were her responsibility, and that it was a rental property and not a hotel.

    Just view this as a temporary blip, get stuck in and then enjoy your new home!


    Hearing conflicting stories, the letting agents claim the previous tenants had only just moved out hence not enough time for them to properly sort it out. However upon speaking to the cleaners, they told us they came to clean this place a week ago and at that point it had already been Vacated.

    but yes we have began cleaning and have left a nice pile of dirty clothes, sheets and toothbrushes!!
    If the cleaners came a week ago to clean what happened that it wasn't clean.

    So what happened in the intervening week? Sounds like the problem is the cleaners were inept!

    They claimed they left it clean but to them it looks like someone’s Cooked since they cleaned it. (Which seems unbelievable)

    I’d agree the cleaners were inept, but it’s the letting agents responsibility to check it, and if there was issues they could have let us know they need a few more days to clean it (which we would have understood) but it clearly hasn’t been checked. They sent the cleaners around to collect all the crap(which they said they couldn’t do) , and to do a second clean round. But they were here 5 minutes, cleaned some door handles, made some excuses and left.

    Both the letting agents and cleaners are incompetent.
    End of story.
    Starts to make you wonder why we have so many people are getting involved in letting out properties if they know they can more or less get away with things like this.

  • As someone who does tenancy cleans, we certainly wouldn't remove anything in the property. However we would clean it to a decent standard. I wouldn't be impressed with these cleaners.

    However bagging up all this stuff and shoving it in a cupboard isn't the end of the world, and it is probably safe to get rid of once you have the ok from the landlord. And cleaning is something you have control over, at least it isn't a leaking roof or broken heating.

  • If that’s the state they left it in after cleaning, I dread to think what it would have been like before!
  • That 'rubbish' is the LL property. You should have their address, have it delivered to them!
