Paper Direct Debits applications

On August 5th I set up an online Direct Debit instruction for payment of my first paid 'Over75' TVL. I could not understand why, after confirmation of receipt of application, I did not receive any payment plan etc. Until today, September 1st, I had a letter from TVL saying there was a problem with the DD. I contacted them and was told that because my bank account was set up before 1986 the bank would only accept a paper DD mandate. I have set up many DD's over the past years and have never had this problem.
Any thoughts folks?

I know I'm probably teaching grandma to suck eggs, but the letter was definitely genuine?I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

How would TV licence people know your account was opened before 1986?
There is something very fishy about this - my advice - chuck it in the bin and wait for them to contact you again.
TV licensing is one of the most common scams especially by E-mail so be careful who you are dealing with.0 -
What number did you contact TVL on?0

I make it my policy to pay my TV Licence annually by cheque, and I recommend you do the same. This is my own personal protest against one government department (TV Licensing) refusing to offer another government department (The Post Office) the facility to collect license fees, but instead using an alternative private collection company (PayPoint). Send them a cheque now and you're in the clear.0
