Is HP instant ink a rip off?

  • Thanks all, will sign up to the free plan and see how it goes.  I mostly use the printer for the odd form, and also postage labels for things I sell on ebay, could well be no pages 1 month and 30 the next.

The free plan is 15 pages per month.   There is no roll-over on that plan of unused allowance.

    10 additional pages cost £1 i.e. 10p each.

It's unclear what happens if/when you upgrade/downgrade your plan mid-month (because you have run out of inclusive pages, for example).   It would be useful to know.
  • Print some A4 sized photo's to use up all your ink.  Works for some and not others is it a ripoff?

Seems its only a ripoff if you fail to buy wisely.  Print a couple of 3/4 empty pages a year then
it's probably not worth it. Print 50 full colour A4 pages a month it could well be worth it.

    £2 for 50 A4 photo's? is that bad value?

To me it's not a ripoff but not worth it either, my simple solution is not to purchase it.

Is the photo paper you use free then?

    1. Changing Your Service Plan. You may change Your choice of Service Plan by following the directions on Your Dashboard. Downgrading Your Service Plan will become effective as of the beginning of Your next Month Period and will not retroactively apply. Upgrading the plan will be effective, at Your discretion either (1) immediately, and the changes retroactively applied to the current billing cycle, or (2) from the beginning of the next billing cycle. To view Your current Service Plan and other details, go to Your Dashboard
Once you upgrade from the free service ( or start on a paid plan ) it is not possible to      return/downgrade to free plan.

The best ink decision I ever made. £1.99 per month for not having to even think about the expensive dodgy counterfeit refilled minefield of buying half full ink cartridges is well worth it imho

I use the £3.50 plan, i think thats 100 pages a month, which i was printing and more,  but probably i could get away with the 50 pages now,  so should look at lowering it i didnt know you could do that,  OTOH i dont have to think about each page i print.
I'm sure its more than i would pay on non HP ink but it avoids the faff of ordering, keeping tabs on ink useage etc.

I use the £2.00 plan. HP might come out ahead on that over a year with us but I'm not going to miss that amount each month. The only thing is that I turn it off at the mains sometimes and I get the occasional e-mail telling me to leave it on stand-by so the levels and page count can be measured.
